This simulation game deals with situations in which authorities are involved. Participants reflect on their strategies about how to deal with authorities. They develop strategies for addressing their issues using conflict management techniques.


Time 90 min

Group Size 10-20 people

The scenario of this simulation game is simple and realistic: A student has an urgent request and needs to talk with the director. Unfortunately the director is busy and not available. Before the student might try to come to the director with his request, he needs to pass the secretary.

The game has two episodes. The playing time is quite short, so there will be more time for several turns.


There are the following roles

The trainer explains the situation: A student wants to have a meeting with the director and has at first to convince the secretary. [5 minutes]

Participants get their role and time for preparation. Faciltators prepare the room with the chairs and the tables. [15 minutes]

Depending from the dynamics of the game you might play both episodes quickly after another or start with the first only after evaluation of the first episode.

Episode 1: Meeting with a dragon

The student tries to convince the secretary to give him access. [10 minutes]

Evaluation questions:

  • How did you feel in this role?
  • What was your goal? How did you succeed?
  • What was your intention to act this way?
  • What might have been done different?

Question to the observer:

  • What might the student have done different?

Episode 2: Meeting with the director

With student, secretary, and director. The Episode 1 will be repeated, and during the play the players proceed to episode 2. [15 minutes]

Evaluation questions for the student:

  • Which hints have helped you? What could you use in practice?
  • What happended, that the situation did not develop like expected?

Questions to the other players:

  • Was it more difficult to remain in your role with your position?

Question to observer:

  • How satisfied you are with the play?
  • What might have been done different?


After this short evaluation you might discuss with the participants their different experiences with similar conflict situations. Find some common strategies and visualize them. [25 minutes]
