Goal

Participants train and reflect their discussion skills and exchange different points of view on a specific topic

Steps

1. The topic of the discussion is introduced, e.g.

  • “The earth is flat” or
  • “Journalism cannot be objective”

2. The participants receive 6 picture cards (e.g. Dixit card set , or a self-made) each, the remaining cards are put face-down in the center of the room or somewhere else in reach of everyone.

3. One of the participants starts the discussion by presenting his/her own perspective supported by the visual impulse from the picture card. The argumentation shall be limited to the visual impulse and - if agreed upon - with a time limit. After presenting the perspective, the participant lays the card openly in the middle of the group so it is visible for everyone. (3 minutes)

4. One after another, the other participants agree or disagree, complement or contradict the perspective that was presented, while being supported by the visual impulse from one of the cards in their hands. Again, their argumentation is limited to the visual impulse of the card and if agreed in addition by a time limit. ( 3 minutes each)

5. The discussion can go clockwise around the group. If a participant does not have a visual impulse at the moment, he/she can pass the turn to the next participant.

6. When it is again the turn of the participant who started the discussion, he/she takes one new card from the deck of the remaining unused cards. The round continues.

7. The discussion has finished when the participants feel they do not have new arguments, or when the time window of this session is over.

8. Optional: A reflection round may be introduced.

Reflection

  • How was it do discuss by being limited to the visual impulse?
  • Was it rather a limitation or a support for you?
  • Were you able to follow the argumentation that you had envisioned from the beginning?
  • Were you able to listen actively and to understand the other side before giving your own perspective?
  • Were you able to take a pause to think before reacting to anything?
  • How was the group cooperating?
  • Was the discussion fair and respectful?
  • Did you learn new aspects about the topic?

Variation

If the discussion is run by an experienced group that can self-moderate the session, the group might choose their own rules regarding the chronology.

For the case that a big group cannot be divided into smaller groups, two or three persons might share a hand of six cards. They only share the cards as visual impulse for argumentation, but they do not necessarily agree as a group on a joint position.
