The Democracy and Human Rights Education in Europe (DARE) Network was officially launched on 28 June 2003 in Antwerp. We are creating a European platform for Education for Democratic Citizenship (EDC) and Human Rights Education (HRE). DARE is engaging in networking and supporting cooperation of EDC/HRE practitioners, stakeholders and policy makers beyond project oriented approach.

Democracy, Human Rights, Participation

We are a Europe-wide network of primarily NGOs, academic institutions and training providers devoted to promote active democratic citizenship and human rights through formal education, non-formal and informal education, and life-long learning. The network currently consists of 36 members from 26 countries in Europe.

In the name of our more than 40 members we are advocating for visibility, recognition, and adequate resources to sustain the future of education for democracy and human rights in Europe.

The perspective of Education for Democratic Citizenship/Human Rights Education is important for us, because...

  • Democracy learning must be relevant in everywhere in Europe and accessible for all ages.
  • Fake news, hatred, hostility to people and to democracy occur everywhere and need to be addressed by education and learning.
  • Those who are aware of their rights can also act consciously and freely
  • Democracy shows itself in democratically acting citizens and they have to be empowered to do so.
  • Shrinking spaces for civil society threaten democratic coexistence.
  • The large transformations and challenges of our time, whether digital transformation, climate crisis or global inequality, can only be solved positively, humanely and fairly if they are addressed democratically.
